Meritorious Artist Đỗ Quốc Hưng
Deputy Director in charge of the Vietnam National Academy of Music
In 1991, he began his journey at the Hanoi Conservatory (predecessor of the Vietnam National Academy of Music) for his musical education. Over the past 30 years, this largest music training institution in Vietnam has been witness to his dedication and growth, from vocational school to university, graduate school, and successfully defending his doctoral thesis. Now entrusted with the management of this institution he considers his home, he finds great happiness.
At the conference, his colleagues such as Associate Prof. Nguyen Huy Phuong, Associate Prof. Le Anh Tuan, People's Artist Bui Cong Duy, Ms. Duong Thi Thanh Binh... all share the view that assuming responsibility for the Vietnam National Academy of Music in the context of globalizing music poses a major challenge for its leadership. However, with the talent and dedication of People's Artist Quoc Hung, everyone can trust in the new development of the country's largest music training institution. As for People's Artist Quoc Hung himself, he has promised to continue learning and researching further to ensure that the institution he manages remains a leader in the country's musical landscape.
Doctor of Music - People's Artist Quoc Hung, born in 1970 in Dong Anh, Hanoi, excels in both performance and teaching. He possesses a distinctive bass voice and is one of Vietnam's leading opera singers.
In the realm of performance, in 2000, he won first prize in the National Chamber Music Competition II. In 2004, he was awarded the Gold Cup at the Spring International Music Festival in Pyongyang, North Korea.
Despite having a bass voice, his vocal range (lowest and highest notes) is extensive, allowing People's Artist Quoc Hung to excel in roles for baritone and tenor voices as well. Additionally, stemming from a background in traditional Vietnamese theater, his versatility, softness, and flexibility in vocal delivery and character portrayal have greatly contributed to his interpretations in both Western opera and general vocal music.
Internationally renowned works associated with Quoc Hung include the aria "The Marriage of Figaro" from Mozart's opera of the same name; "Vous qui Faites L’endormie" from Gounod's opera Faust; the opera "The Magic Flute"; the opera "Case of Love". In Vietnamese songs, Quoc Hung has successfully performed main songs blending patriotic sentiments such as "Proud to Rise, Vietnam" and "Our Homeland Calls My Name"...
Throughout his performance and teaching career in vocal music, People's Artist Quoc Hung has always studied and explored traditional Vietnamese singing arts, especially in traditional theater, to apply to the teaching of vocal music at the Department of Vocal Music at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. This research aims to contribute to overcoming the limitations in the vocal characteristics of Vietnamese singers when performing Western opera and in interpreting songs in the main vocal genre.
During his tenure as the head of the Department of Vocal Music, People's Artist Do Quoc Hung has been determined to standardize the professional competence and enhance the scientific approach of the department's faculty, thereby contributing to the improvement of the quality of vocal music education suitable for current trends domestically and internationally.
People's Artist Quoc Hung is also a member of the artistic councils of many prestigious professional festivals and artistic associations in the country. He has also successfully served as the Artistic Director for numerous major cultural programs commemorating national holidays over many years.
In 2017, Quoc Hung defended his doctoral thesis; in 2019, he was honored with the title of People's Artist by the State. Before assuming the position of Deputy Director in charge of the Vietnam National Academy of Music, People's Artist Quoc Hung held various leadership positions including Vice Head and subsequently Head of the Department of Vocal Music.
